What the openSPOT4 Pro User Manual Assumes You Already Know

The openSPOT4 manual is a good manual. It documents SharkRF's hardware in detail — receiver sensitivity, emission designators, operating temperature range, battery chemistry. What it does not do is explain the vocabulary of the hobby it drops you into. It has no glossary, no abbreviations list, and no terminology section.

Counted across the 124-page manual: 96 terms are used two or more times, and 20 of them are given any kind of explanation. The other 76 are used as though you already know them. Eight appear in the table of contents, before page one.

Nine of the 76 are the awkward kind: ordinary words the manual uses in a sense different from the one they carry everywhere else in digital voice. Slot here is a storage position, not a DMR time slot. Scan means looking for Wi-Fi networks, not stepping through channels. Bubble is a box on a screen, not a hole in coverage. Those nine are in Part Two too, defined in the sense the manual uses and flagged with the meaning they have elsewhere. Part Two carries further such flags on terms beyond the nine.

Two halves. Part One explains what the manual leaves unexplained, in the order you meet it. Part Two is the A–Z: every term the manual uses without defining, with a search box. Use the first if you are reading the manual through, the second if you have hit one word and need it now.

1 · The eight words on the contents page

Before the first sentence of the manual, the table of contents names eight protocols. The eight are not equivalent to one another — five are voice modes, one is a network, one is a data system and one is paging.

DMR, D-STAR, C4FM/Fusion, NXDN, P25

Five separate digital voice modes. A radio built for one cannot talk to another over the air. They differ in who created them, how they carry voice, and what network sits behind them. The openSPOT4 supports all five, one at a time; the active mode is a setting.

Wires-X

Yaesu's own internet linking system for Fusion, reached with Yaesu equipment. The manual has a section called "Using the Wires-X button" because Fusion radios have a physical button of that name — the openSPOT4 borrows the button, and does not put you on Yaesu's network.

APRS

A position and short-message reporting network, quite separate from voice. The openSPOT4 can pass your position into it from D-STAR or Fusion.

POCSAG

A radio paging protocol from the 1980s, still used for amateur paging through DAPNET. Not voice at all. It concerns pager traffic rather than voice.

2 · Before you can finish Quick Setup

Quick Setup asks for identities. It does not explain that they are different things, issued by different bodies, for different modes.

Callsign

Used 125 times, never explained. Your licence identifier, issued by your national regulator. It is what D-STAR routes on directly, and what other modes display once your numeric ID has been looked up.

DMR ID

A seven-digit number issued on application, with proof of licence, by the registration body serving your country. Used 51 times in the manual with no statement of what it is or where to get one. DMR, NXDN and P25 all route on numbers rather than callsigns, which is why the number matters and the callsign alone will not do.

CCS7

The same seven-digit number, used by D-STAR's newer routing system. The manual uses the term six times without saying that it is your DMR ID under another name.

ID database

A downloaded table mapping those numbers to callsigns and names. It is why the call log shows "W6ABC" rather than "3106123". A very new operator may not be in it yet, which is not a fault.

3 · The Connectors page, decoded

The Connectors page is where the openSPOT4 is told what to talk to. Every entry on it is a term. The manual states what each connector connects to. What the networks themselves are is not covered.

4 · URCALL, and the numbers that are commands

URCALL is used 92 times and never explained — more than any other unexplained term in the manual.

URCALL

A field in a D-STAR radio, short for "your call" — the destination of your transmission. Set it to CQCQCQ for an ordinary call. It has a second job the manual does not state: URCALL doubles as a command line. Particular text typed there is read as an instruction rather than a destination. The manual tells you to set it to DCS001 A, FCS00199, YS89804 and to seven spaces followed by a letter — each one a command, none of them described as such.

The numbers that are not people

On DMR, NXDN and P25 the manual instructs you to "start a short call" to various IDs. These are control commands. Nothing is at the other end.

4000Unlinks. A private call to 4000 unlinks a reflector; a group call to 4000 unlinks reflectors and all dynamic talkgroups.
4001 upwardLinks a reflector module — 4001 for module A, 4002 for B, and so on. Reflector IDs run from 4000 to 5000.
9990The parrot, or echo — plays your transmission back to you.
9000Asks which configuration profile is active. The answer is spoken.
9001, 9002 …Switches to configuration profile 1, 2 and so on.
9995Speaks the device's current time.
9996Speaks the battery status.
9997Speaks the active IP address — useful when you cannot find the device on the network.
9998Speaks the connector status.
Why this matters more than it looks. These are the commands that make the device usable without a phone or computer in your hand. 9997 speaks the device's current IP address, which is how the web interface is found again after an address change.

5 · Reading the Status page

The call log labels each entry with letters and percentages. The manual states what the letters stand for and not what the numbers mean.

BER — shown after the letter B

Bit error rate, as a percentage: how much of what arrived had to be corrected. Low is good. A rising BER on a strong signal points at frequency error or deviation rather than at distance, which is the opposite of the analog instinct.

Packet loss — shown after the letter L

Shown on network calls only: how much of the stream did not arrive over the internet. This is a network figure, not an RF one. Audio can be choppy with a perfect radio signal.

RX offset, and what AutoCal is measuring

A frequency correction in hertz, compensating for the difference between your radio's idea of the frequency and the openSPOT4's. Not to be confused with a repeater offset, which is a transmit-receive split measured in megahertz.

Two different figures appear. The Specifications section gives the oscillator frequency stability as 1 ppm. The AutoCal section states 0.5 ppm. Both figures are in the same document. Either way the point stands — the device is factory calibrated, so a persistent offset usually indicates the radio is the one that has drifted.

6 · What is missing because it was never SharkRF's to write

The manual mentions Pi-Star zero times. WPSD, zero. MMDVMHost, zero.

That silence has a consequence the manual never states. The openSPOT4 does not run MMDVMHost. It is purpose-built hardware running SharkRF's own software, configured through its own web interface. The overwhelming majority of hotspot guidance in circulation — forum posts, videos, written guides — assumes a Raspberry Pi running Pi-Star or WPSD, and none of it applies to this device. The settings do not exist, the file paths do not exist, and the terminology only partly overlaps.

Pi-Star and WPSD instructions do not map onto the openSPOT4, and none of the documentation on either side covers the difference — each describes only its own product.

Where these figures come from

The counts are mechanical: every term was searched across the full text of the manual, and the figure of 96 technical terms used twice or more, of which 20 carry any definitional phrasing, comes from that search rather than from an impression. The control call IDs, connector descriptions, oscillator figures and Status page labels are quoted from the manual itself. Definitions of the general vocabulary are in Part Two below, drawn from The VHF/UHF Digital Voice Amateur's Glossary.

This page describes the manual for firmware version v86, the version stated on its title page. SharkRF updates the online manual when a stable firmware is released, so section numbering may move.

Why it mattersFive of the six modes use it. What separates them is not the modulation but the vocoder and the network above it.

The usual number for Parrot — the echo service that plays your transmission back to you. Dialled as a private call on most DMR networks.

Application Programming Interface

A machine-readable interface. Several hotspot dashboards and networks offer one, so activity data can be pulled into a web page or script.

API key3 uses in the manual

A secret token letting your hotspot dashboard, or an external tool, change settings on a network account on your behalf.

Why it mattersThe key is what allows a dashboard button to add a static talkgroup on the network rather than only on your hotspot. Anything holding it can change the account settings it covers.

Audio level2 uses in the manual

How loud you arrive at the far end. On digital voice this is decided entirely inside your radio.

Why it mattersThere is no volume control anywhere in a hotspot, a network or a reflector, because they carry data rather than sound. Audio level is set at the transmitting radio.

The percentage of bits arriving wrong, shown live on hotspot dashboards.

Why it mattersUnder about one per cent is healthy. A rising figure alongside a strong signal points at frequency alignment, not distance.

The largest worldwide amateur DMR network. Talkgroups are activated by transmitting on them rather than by asking a server first.

Why it mattersBrandMeister conventions appear in much hotspot documentation. Other DMR networks do not necessarily share them.

Bubble2 uses in the manual

A chat-style box in the call log or the message list. Each call gets one, with the details in its top right corner; clicking a message bubble sets that station as the reply destination.

The trapElsewhere in digital voice a bubble is a hole in coverage, where the signal collapses entirely instead of fading. Nothing to do with the screen.

Continuous 4-level Frequency Modulation

Four-level frequency shift keying — the modulation Yaesu System Fusion uses. Strictly it is a modulation scheme, not a mode, but in conversation it is used as a name for Fusion itself.

The trapP25 Phase 1 also uses C4FM. Hearing 'C4FM' does not tell you which mode you are listening to.

Callsign125 uses in the manual

Your licence identifier — and in D-STAR and M17, also your network address.

Why it mattersIt addresses a station rather than a place, which is unusual among the digital voice modes.

A numbering scheme sharing the same seven-digit space as DMR IDs, used for D-STAR callsign routing on some systems.

Channel spacing2 uses in the manual

How much spectrum a channel occupies. Most amateur digital voice runs at 12.5 kHz; NXDN also offers 6.25 kHz.

The trapP25 Phase 2 and DMR are often called 6.25 kHz modes. They are not — each uses a 12.5 kHz channel carrying two conversations, which is 6.25 kHz-equivalent per user, not 6.25 kHz occupied.

CPU5 uses in the manual

In this manual, the processor of the computer or phone you are viewing the web interface on — not the openSPOT4's own. The call log is length-limited so your browser does not bog down.

Why it mattersIf the web interface feels slow, the limit exists for that reason. It says nothing about how the device itself is coping.

The trapOn a Raspberry Pi hotspot, CPU load refers to the hotspot's own processor. In this manual the figure refers to the browsing device, and the openSPOT4 does not display its own processor load.

Dropping the current reflector or talkgroup link, usually by dialling a dedicated number or sending an unlink command.

Why it mattersThe unlink command is separate from the link command, and each mode has its own.

The trapThis is not your dashboard password and not your DMR ID. Getting it wrong is a common reason BrandMeister will not connect.

The permanent hardware identifier of a network adapter. You need it to set up a DHCP reservation.

Network Access Code

The code a P25 system carries so a receiver knows the traffic belongs to it. $293 is the default nearly everything ships with, and $F7E is the setting that receives regardless.

Why it mattersIt does the same job for P25 that a CTCSS tone does for FM and a colour code does for DMR — and getting it wrong produces the same symptom, a signal you can see but cannot hear.

Net6 uses in the manual

Short for network, used in setting names such as Replace DGID to net and Cross mode DGID to net. The net side is the internet side of the device; the modem side is the radio side.

The trapIn amateur radio generally, a net is a scheduled on-air meeting with a controlling station. The manual never uses it that way.

Offset13 uses in the manual

A frequency difference — but which one depends entirely on context.

The trapRepeater offset is a transmit-receive split in megahertz. Radio offset is a crystal correction in hertz. Both appear in hotspot setup.

OpenSpot5 uses in the manual

A family of self-contained commercial hotspots from SharkRF, in Estonia. It is not a Pi with a modem on top — it is purpose-built hardware running the maker's own software, configured through its own web interface.

The trapBecause it does not run MMDVMHost, Pi-Star and WPSD instructions do not apply to it.

Over7 uses in the manual

In this manual, only the ordinary English word — hover the mouse over an icon.

The trapOn the air, an over is one transmission: everything you say between pressing the button and releasing it. New operators meet the word in that sense first and can be thrown by seeing it here.

P
P2565 uses in the manual
Project 25

Also called APCO-25. The North American public-safety digital standard, begun in 1989. Amateurs run it mostly on retired commercial equipment, and almost always Phase 1.

Why it mattersPhase 1's vocoder is the odd one out — IMBE, whose core patents have expired — which is why bridging Phase 1 does not need the licensed hardware the AMBE modes do.

The trapPhase 1 and Phase 2 are genuinely different underneath — Phase 1 is FDMA with the IMBE vocoder, Phase 2 is two-slot TDMA with AMBE+2. Statements about 'P25' are usually about Phase 1.

Packet loss7 uses in the manual

Network data that never arrives at all, as opposed to arriving late or unevenly.

Why it mattersIt sounds different from jitter: jitter gives choppy or stuttering audio, loss gives clean audio with pieces missing. Telling them apart points you at different causes.

Parrot3 uses in the manual

A service that records what you transmit and plays it straight back. Every mode has one.

Why it mattersA parrot call exercises the whole path — radio, modem, hotspot, internet, network, and back — and returns the result to the operator who made it.

POCSAG RIC2 uses in the manual
Receiver Identity Code

The address identifying one pager, so a message reaches that pager and no other.

Port15 uses in the manual

Used for two different things in the same manual. Most often the physical socket — the USB-C port, the USB serial port. Occasionally a network port number, as in a voice announcement server's host and port.

Why it mattersOnly the network sense matters when something cannot connect. Nothing you do to the USB socket affects it.

The trapA physical port is a hole you plug a cable into. A network port is a number that has to be reachable through a firewall. The manual does not signal which it means; the surrounding words are the only clue.

How strong the incoming signal is, in dBm.

The trapStrong RSSI and high BER at the same time is the classic signature of a frequency or deviation problem. Signal strength alone tells you very little on digital.

RX group list11 uses in the manual

The set of talkgroups a channel will also listen to, beyond the one it transmits on.

Why it mattersThis is why you can hear traffic on talkgroups you did not select. It is also why you sometimes cannot — the list is the filter.

Scan3 uses in the manual

In this manual, scanning for Wi-Fi networks — the wireless scan list is the networks the device can see around it.

The trapOn a DMR radio, scanning means stepping through channels listening for activity. The two have nothing in common.

A group of channels the radio steps through looking for activity, stopping when it finds some.

Search & Direct5 uses in the manual

The Wires-X screen for finding a node or room by number or name.

Server name2 uses in the manual

The friendly label and the actual internet address of a network server, entered together when adding one by hand.

The trapThe name is only a label for your own benefit. The address is the part that has to be right, and a working name with a wrong address fails silently.

Slot3 uses in the manual

A numbered storage position. A configuration profile slot holds one saved setup; a Wi-Fi SSID slot holds one saved network.

The trapOn DMR, a time slot is one of the two conversations sharing a single channel. Same word, entirely different idea, and both appear in digital voice writing.

Squelch5 uses in the manual

The circuit that keeps the receiver quiet until there is something to hear.

The trapOn digital modes there is nothing to open a squelch on — you either decode or you do not. The access codes — colour code on DMR, NAC on P25, RAN on NXDN — do the job squelch does on analog.

SSID25 uses in the manual
Service Set Identifier

The name a Wi-Fi network broadcasts.

The trapThree unrelated things share these letters in one setup: the Wi-Fi network name, the DMR ESSID suffix, and the APRS station suffix.

Talker Alias6 uses in the manual

A DMR feature that carries the operator's callsign and name inside the voice stream, so the receiving radio can display who is talking without a contact list entry.

Why it mattersTalker Alias carries the callsign in the stream, so a receiving radio can display it without a matching contact list entry. Support varies by radio and by network.

TDMA2 uses in the manual
Time Division Multiple Access

Splitting one channel into alternating time slots so it carries more than one conversation.

Why it mattersTDMA is why one DMR repeater on one frequency pair carries two independent conversations at the same time.

TGIF2 uses in the manual

An independent DMR network with talkgroups managed through its own website and API. Anyone can create a talkgroup, which gives it a different character from BrandMeister.

Timeout14 uses in the manual

Three timers share this word: the radio's transmit time-out, a gateway's network timeouts, and a dynamic talkgroup expiring.

Transcoding6 uses in the manual

Converting audio from one vocoder to another — decoding all the way back to plain audio, then re-encoding. It is how a DMR user talks to a D-STAR user.

Why it mattersTranscoding is not a translation you can do on the numbers. The audio genuinely has to be reconstructed, which is why it costs processing power or hardware, and why it adds delay.

U
UDP4 uses in the manual
User Datagram Protocol

The lightweight network protocol nearly all digital voice traffic uses. It does not retransmit lost packets, which is the right trade for live audio.

Why it mattersUDP is also why restrictive networks break digital voice while ordinary web browsing still works — many block UDP or non-standard ports.

UID3 uses in the manual
Unit ID

The number identifying one radio on an NXDN system, in the way a DMR ID identifies a radio on DMR.

Update4 uses in the manual

In this manual, usually the ordinary verb — to change a setting, as in updating the destination a cross mode call is routed to.

The trapElsewhere it normally means installing new software. The openSPOT4's word for that is firmware upgrade, which is a separate operation with its own section.

URCALL92 uses in the manual
Your Call — the destination field

On D-STAR, the field naming who you are calling. It doubles as a command line — particular letters typed there link, unlink, echo or report status.

VW mode3 uses in the manual
Voice Wide

A Fusion mode using the full channel for voice, giving better audio and no data.

The trapReflectors and hotspots generally expect DN. Leaving a radio in VW is a common reason a Fusion setup appears not to work.

Wires-X25 uses in the manual

Yaesu's own internet linking system for Fusion, using Yaesu hardware and Yaesu's servers.

The trapWires-X and YSF reflectors both carry Fusion. Wires-X uses Yaesu hardware and Yaesu's servers; YSF reflectors are the open reflector world hotspots use.
