A great deal on this site talks about what happens after your voice reaches the internet — reflectors, talkgroups, gateways, bridges. This page is about the small box that gets it there in the first place. No wiring diagrams, no setup steps: just what a hotspot is, how it carries a handheld radio into the worldwide digital networks, and why the very same idea can be as simple as flashing an SD card or as deep a rabbit hole as you care to dig.
The classic way onto a digital voice network is a repeater — a full-sized machine on a tall site that relays your signal and links to the networks. But maybe there is no digital repeater within reach of your handheld. Maybe the ones nearby carry a mode you do not run, or a single network when you want several. Or — a common story — you live somewhere that an outdoor antenna is not welcome, and a hilltop machine is simply not in the cards.
A hotspot answers all of those at once. It is your own personal on-ramp: a tiny node, sitting on a shelf and sharing your home internet, that any of your radios can reach from across the room. Through it, a low-power handheld touches the same worldwide networks a mountaintop repeater does.

That is the whole animal. The radio board handles the last few feet of RF; the computer handles the thousands of miles of internet. Neither is doing anything a repeater does not — there is just a lot less of it, running on a lot less power.
When you key up, your radio does not send analog audio — it sends your voice already digitized into compact data frames (see AMBE and Codec2). The hotspot's radio board receives those frames over the air and hands them to the computer. The computer wraps them in the right network protocol and sends them out over your home internet to a reflector or network server. That server fans your transmission out to everyone else connected — other hotspots, repeaters, and radios — anywhere in the world. Their replies make the return trip and come back down to your handheld. The audio never travels as radio waves any farther than your own room; everything beyond that is the internet doing the carrying.
Hotspots come in two flavors, and the difference is simply how many frequencies they use. A simplex hotspot — by far the most common — uses a single frequency, taking turns transmitting and receiving just like your handheld does. One board, one channel, dead simple. A duplex hotspot uses a transmit/receive pair and behaves more like a miniature repeater; on DMR it can even carry both time slots at once. Duplex costs a bit more and buys capability most casual users never need — but it is there when a setup grows.
None of this is tied to a single system. The same hotspot concept carries DMR, D-STAR, Yaesu System Fusion (C4FM/YSF), NXDN, P25, and M17 — the MMDVM firmware that runs most hotspots is multi-mode by design. (M17 is the exception: MMDVM dropped it in July 2025, and M17 hotspots now run Pi-Star V4.2.3_18, a WPSD-M17 fork, or an M17-native package such as MSpot.) A modest hotspot can be set for one mode and left alone, or it can recognize several and switch between them as different radios key up. Whatever digital voice mode your radio speaks, a hotspot is the on-ramp for it.
This is the part worth understanding before you start: a hotspot can be almost trivially simple or genuinely intricate, and both are legitimate. The same little box sits at either end.
At the simple end, you flash an SD card, enter your callsign and ID, choose one mode and one network, and you are on the air — an afternoon's work, no soldering, no command line. Thousands of hams do exactly this and never need more. At the complex end, that same hardware becomes a project: multiple DMR networks live at once through a DMR Gateway, cross-mode transcoding so a DMR radio can talk to a Fusion user, duplex operation, remote control, several hotspots working as a fleet. The depth is optional — but it is real, and it is where a lot of the fun lives if tinkering is your idea of a good time.
