AnyTone AT-D890UV Quick Reference

The dual band DMR and analog handheld with 4000 channels, a recorder and built in APRS. Keys, the whole programmable key list, both settings menus in full, and the settings that decide whether it works on a hotspot. Condensed from the operating manual.

What this radio is

A dual band DMR and analog handheld, 4000 channels across 250 zones, doing digital and analog on either band with a sub band running alongside the main one. On top of the DMR basics it carries text messaging, a 14 hour voice recorder, digital encryption, emergency and man down alarms, work alone, GPS with APRS position reporting, roaming, vibration, and the analog signaling set of DTMF, 2TONE, 5TONE and CTCSS or DCS.

Almost everything of consequence is set in the CPS programming software rather than on the radio. The radio menu can change most of it after the fact, but scan lists, zones, contacts, hot keys, roaming lists and the APRS setup all have to be built on a computer first.

Controls

Five keys can be given functions: PF1, PF2, PF3, P1 and P2. Set them at Menu → Settings → Radio Set → Key, or in the CPS at Public, Optional Setting, Key function.

Two channels stack on the display. The one in bold is the main channel; the other is the sub channel. Along the top sit the icons for recording, Bluetooth, Bluetooth PTT, VOX, roaming, digital monitor, GPS, inbox, battery, and a signal bar for each band. Each channel line carries its own transmit power and color code.

Programmable key functions

The full list, as the manual gives it. Any of these can go on PF1, PF2, PF3, P1 or P2.

Hot keys and the combination key

A key set to Hot Key 1 through 6 fires whatever that hot key was defined as in the CPS, under Public, Hot key. The choices are:

There is also a combination: hold the star key until the screen says "Next Please Press Dial Key", then press a number key to fire its programmed function. Those are defined in the CPS under Public, Hot key.

Basic operation

Frequency step

Nine steps: 2.5, 5, 6.25, 10, 12.5, 20, 25, 30 and 50 kHz, at Radio Set → Other → Freq Step.

Making and taking calls

When a call comes in

On a digital channel the radio answers anything on the same frequency, color code and slot. If the caller's DMR ID is in your contact list the radio rings or vibrates, the LED lights, and the screen shows the ID, name, city, state, country and call type. When it ends the screen says "Call end" and PTT replies to it.

Three ways to make one

1. By channel. Turn the channel switch to a programmed channel.
2. By talk group. Press Exit to open the TG list, then up or down to pick one.
3. By keypad. Menu to Talk Group, Manual Dial, type the ID, then the key that toggles group or private.

Hold the radio upright, 2.5 to 5 cm from your mouth.

Transmit permission

Set per channel in the CPS, and this is what stops PTT working when you think it should.

The main menu

Zones

250 zones, up to 160 analog or digital channels in each. A zone can be named, hidden from the display, set as the priority zone for the Prior Zone key, or deleted. Channels are added and removed under Edit Chan, and changes have to be saved.

Scan

Up to 250 scan lists, built in the CPS under Public, Scan list. Scan only works in channel mode, not VFO.

• Scan On/Off. Starts it.
• CDT Scan. On an analog channel with CTCSS or DCS set, hunts for the incoming tone and momentarily adopts it so the call comes through.
• Scan list. Assigns a list to the current channel. Digital only.

What it does when it stops

Roaming

Roaming walks a list of repeater channels on a timer and locks onto the strongest. The list is built in the CPS or edited under Roaming Zone on the radio.

• Manual roaming is a single action. It runs once, then switches itself off.
• Fixed Time starts roaming on the interval set in the CPS under Optional Setting, Auto Repeater.
• Out of Range starts it when the repeater cannot be found. The out of range icon shows three times, the radio roams once, then goes back to off.
• Repeater Check makes the radio watch repeater status and show the out of range icon.

After roaming locks onto a repeater, the radio only returns to the previous frequency once the channel or frequency is changed.

Chan Set: digital channels

At Menu → Settings → Chan Set. The menu changes with the channel type, hiding the analog items on a digital channel and the reverse.

Everything not listed here works as it does on a digital channel.

Recording

Each call is saved separately with its DMR ID and time. The radio holds about 14 hours in digital or analog, and the files come off in the CPS under Tool, Radio Recording.

• Record Switch turns recording on.
• Record List holds the files. Play one, and up or down moves through them without leaving the menu.
• Record Send transmits a recording to a talk group or to a DMR ID you dial.
• Loop Playback plays them all in turn.
• Record Delete removes every recording at once.

GPS and satellite

• GPS Mode. GPS, BDS or GLONASS.
• GPS Roaming. Switches zone automatically when the fix falls inside a radius set in the CPS.
• GPS Info. Shows the position. "No Fixed Position" with a gray icon means no fix; go outside or to a window and give it a few minutes.
• Sending a position. From GPS Info, edit, confirm, then Send or Save. Send offers the contact list or a manual dial.
• Satellite. Location comes from the GPS beacon or one of eight fixed points set in the CPS APRS page. The satellite list is loaded from the CPS under Tool, GPS satellite data update.

Digital monitor

The promiscuous mode. Four settings decide how wide it listens.

While a call with an unmatched ID is coming in, one key sets up a response so PTT answers it, and another offers to save it as a new channel in a zone you pick.

APRS

Upload Type picks none, analog APRS or DMR APRS.

Analog APRS

• PTT Upload. Off, on PTT press, or on PTT release.
• Upload Power, WN, frequency, Signal Path, Upload text. Transmit power, bandwidth, frequency, path and the text that appears on the APRS site.
• Ana APRS SMS. New message, outbox and inbox for analog APRS.
• Ana APRS Info. Info Filter turns off message types you do not want. Dec Path chooses which receiver decodes: Path A is the main band, Path B the sub band. The log is here, with a Delete All.

Digital APRS

• PTT Upload. Off, or transmits on PTT release.
• Report Channel. One of eight channels set in the CPS APRS Digi page.
• Upload Slot. The channel's own slot, slot 1, or slot 2.
• Upload ID. Which DMR ID sends it.

Intervals Set gives automatic transmission on a timer. Upload Beacon chooses the GPS beacon, which needs GPS on and locked, or a fixed beacon whose position is set in the CPS and which works with GPS off.

Most of the APRS setup is CPS only, and the APRS menu does not even appear in the software until you tick the APRS box under Tools, Options, APRS.

NOAA weather channels

The weather channel always runs on the sub band. With WX alarm on, the speaker stays muted until a 1750 Hz tone arrives, then opens and alarms for three minutes before muting again. WX monitor leaves the speaker open so the broadcast plays continuously.

Reset

1. Power the radio off. This has to be done after a firmware update.
2. Hold PTT and PF1 together and power on.
3. The screen asks "Are you sure you want to initialize radio?". Exit backs out, Confirm resets.
4. On restart it asks for the time zone, date and time. Up and down set the year, P1 moves to the next field, Confirm saves.

Troubleshooting

Specifications

DMR IDs

The radio holds more than one DMR ID, so a single radio can carry a commercial ID and an amateur callsign ID at once. They live in the CPS under Digital, Radio ID List, and each channel picks one.

It also keeps a separate database for the worldwide contact list, imported as comma separated values, which is what puts a callsign, name and location on screen when someone you have never worked calls in.
