The order to build a codeplug in, every field that matters with the recommended value, and the parts of this radio that are not obvious. Also covers the Radioddity GD-168.
Three things that stop people dead
The keypad ships locked. Press Menu, the green bar, and * at the same time to unlock it. If that does not work, the radio was shipped in professional mode with the full 136 to 174 and 400 to 480 MHz band, and it has to be set to amateur mode in the CPS Optional Settings before the keypad will open.
Read the radio before you write anything. Read it first so the CPS knows which frequency band your radio is, then build on that file. The first read should have both boxes ticked, Digital Contact List and Other Data, and can take five minutes.
Do not mix CPS and firmware versions. Get both from anytone.net/download and keep them matched.
A codeplug from an AT-D878UV or AT-D578UV will open in the D168UV CPS and is a good starting point. The catch is the frequency band has to match your radio's.
A codeplug is built from the bottom up. Each step depends on the one before it, so doing them out of order means going back.
Digital > Radio ID List. Double click line 1 and enter your DMR number and a name. The radio holds several IDs, so one radio can carry a commercial ID and an amateur ID at once, and each channel picks which to use. Master ID changes every digital channel to that ID in one go.
Digital > Contact Talk Groups. Double click line 1. Each entry needs a Name, Call Type of Group Call for a talk group, and the TG number. Up to 10,000 talk groups.
For a big list, export the talk groups from the CPS to a .csv, edit it in a spreadsheet, and import it back through Tool > Import. The exported file gives you the exact column format to match.
This is the look-up table that turns a DMR ID into a name, callsign and location on your screen. The radio holds 500,000 entries.
user.csv from radioid.net/database/dumps.Export the original list while the radio is still new. That gives you a known good example of the format to check against later.
Public > Channel, double click line 1. 4,000 channels, analog or digital.
| Field | What to put in it |
|---|---|
| Channel Name | Usually the repeater name and the talk group |
| Receive and Transmit Freq | VHF or UHF |
| Channel Type | Analog, Digital, Mixed Analog or Mixed Digital. A mixed channel auto senses which is arriving. |
| Transmit Power | VHF 5, 2.5, 1, 0.2 W. UHF 4.5, 2.2, 0.5, 0.2 W. |
| Band Width | 12.5 or 25 kHz, analog only. Digital is always 12.5. |

|---|---|
| Contact 1 | The talk group for this channel. The single most important field on a digital channel. |
| Radio ID | Which of your DMR IDs this channel uses |
| RX Color Code | The repeater's color code |
| TX Color Code | Usually the same as RX. This is a newer field, so older imported codeplugs may need it set. |
| Slot | 1 or 2 |
| Receive Group List | Which talk groups you hear. None means you hear only the programmed talk group. |
| Digital Encryption | Off, or one of 32 keys |
| SMS Forbid | On or Off |

| Idle TX | Tick to let the radio move to the other slot if the programmed one is busy. Both radios need it set. |
| Extend, ARC4, AES, Multiple Key, Random Key | Not used at this time |
| Field | What to put in it |
|---|---|
| CTCSS/DCS Decode | Off, or the tone the receiver needs |
| CTCSS/DCS Encode | Off, or the tone to transmit |
| Squelch Mode | Carrier is the usual choice |
| Optional Signal | Off, DTMF, 2Tone, 5Tone or QDC1200 |
| PTT ID | Off, Start, End, or Start and End. Needs the optional signal set and the EOT and BOT filled in first. |
| Scramble | Pick a frequency for basic voice inversion. Other radios hear noise. |
| Custom CTCSS | For a tone that is not on the standard list |
| R5 Tone Bot and Eot | Send an R5 tone at PTT press and at release |
| Reverse | Swaps TX and RX on this channel |
| Compand | Companding, so the signal carries further with less noise |
Setting up an optional signal, the six steps
DTMF, 2Tone, 5Tone and QDC1200 all follow the same pattern. Using DTMF as the example:
Public > Zone, double click line 1. Name it, then move channels from the left list to the right with the double arrow. The A Channel and B Channel at the top right are the two channels that zone opens on.
No 16 channel limit on this radio. Order the members with the Up and Down buttons, or sort by ID or Name, because that order is what the channel knob follows. Naming a zone to match its scan list keeps things straight.
Zones are changed on the radio with the up and down arrow keys.
Public > Scan List. Same pattern as zones: name it, then move channels across with the double arrow. Then go back and point each channel's Scan List field at it.
While a scan is running, pressing Menu on the radio parks it on the channel it found, which may be in another zone.
This decides which channel you transmit on when you press PTT during a scan. It is at the bottom of the scan list page and it catches people out.
| Setting | PTT transmits on |
|---|---|
| Selected | The channel you were on before the scan started |
| Selected + Talk Back | The channel before the scan if nothing is being received, or the channel with the signal if there is one |
| Priority Channel Select | The priority channel |
| Last Called | The channel that last received a call |
| Last Used | The channel last used |
| Priority Channel Select + Talk Back | The channel before the scan if nothing is being received, or the priority channel if there is |

Four hours of every call, if Record is On in the radio menu. Play them back on the radio, or pull them down through Tool > Radio Recording. Set the COM port first.
Filter by start and end time, by duration or interval, by call type private, group or all, by RX or TX, and by caller ID. Get File List downloads them. Play, play one by one, pause, stop, and page through. Export saves a recording as .amb, and the guide notes there may be no computer application that plays that format.
Version your codeplugs
At some point you will break a codeplug by changing one setting. Numbered files let you go back to the last one that worked.

Condensed from the AT-D168UV Programming Guide, revision 250122, written by KD0PNQ. Values marked as recommended are that author's, not factory defaults. The guide covers programming rather than operation, so the radio's own manual remains the reference for everything else, including battery safety.
